Tarp Shed

Hey All, I have a new I phone! Let's see if this helps with some more regular blog posts.
So we ordered this little shed, 12' by 25', with the idea of having a place to store some equipment, as our shed is getting full, and we all know the benefits of keeping machinery under cover. Tanya was kind enough to pick it up for us, and deliver it earlier this week. Yesterday we put it up. It just took the afternoon for Marty, Jesse and I to erect it. I actually just read the instructions and they did all the work. We set it up over in the gravel pit, out of the wind, and if it works as planned, we might get another.
We screwed the base together in our yard, and then realized they were too wide to fit between the fence posts on the roadway, so Jesse jogged along behind the Gator.

Happy Birthday Stacy!!!

Stacy turns 28 today. This picture was taken a few months ago, when Tanya and Stacy had a girls day out. I think this next picture is great, she almost made it to the Valley View, too bad it was up hill. I hope you have a great birthday Stacy, or should I say had!

Spring Planting and other random stuff...

I should have got the picture of the cow and calf I had to go pick up in the field tonight. I thought I should update the blog, and start off with a picture of the last field we had planted, so as I am taking the picture, Jesse calls for me to bring trailer to get cow and new calf. This was the last field to be planted, after several fixes of tile drains, and the removal of the big pile of topsoil that was piled up 2 years ago. But no more ditch, and it looks great.
Before we planted, we needed to spread some manure on the field, and as we were unable to suck up anymore manure, we decided to take advantage of some extra time this spring has allowed, and clean out pit completely, the first time in 21 years, since we built it in fall of 1990.

So all went according to plan. Until oops...

Flat tire...

Probably should have called CAA. But it only happened once, and after that things went well. We were happy to get it all cleaned out. We also found lots of stuff we hadn't seen in awhile. Lots of chain, one with a snap that still worked, 2 hammers, several insemination tools, and on one of my first pushes across, a socket caught my eye...

Oh yes, we bought that manure spreader, mainly to spread the hen manure we have been getting, but it worked well here too.
We planted our first corn on May 14th. It was up on May 26th, which is also the day we planted our last corn. And we also planted a lot of corn for others in between. Here is the corn as I saw it while getting the cows on the morning of May 26th, a picture of a newly planted field, and a picture of the last field I had planted, with Jesse packing it, and Marty and Ross picking the last of the rocks.

Some more random pictures...
New Brillion seeder, a new diesel tank, a Mother's Day meal, Sarah presenting a Canspell award for the NB Egg Producers, Vanessa riding Banner, and Ross on a tractor.

On another front, Carrie is apparently going to graduate from high school this year. That will mark 25 years that we have had kids in school. Tanya started KG in 1987. We might be going to miss this. This weekend started with the grad BBQ yesterday, and then today we had the Baccalaureate service at the Anglican church in Springfield, after which the grads all walked to the new Belleisle Community Center, and we had an enjoyable grad banquet. A few exams this week might be necessary...
A few pics from this evening...

Happy Birthday Jesse!!!

Well... My main man turns 26 today. Gotta love him, it's great to have superman here on the farm everyday. We've had a great spring, got lots done and Jesse has been an awesome help. More than a help, he has taken over many of the jobs that used to be just mine. Thanks Jesse, and Happy Birthday!!!

Royal Watching

Ok, so I was busy waving and didn't think to take a picture until it was too late. Then I couldn't see the plane but I snapped a pic anyways. And I did get a picture, although small. I was out building a fence on the hill behind the barn today, when the plane that carried Prince Charles and Camilla flew right over the farm. I recognized it from the pictures in today's paper. Now I am trying to find out if they were actually on the plane, or did they drive to Saint John, and the plane flew down without them. Grandma says Camilla changed her attire from what she was wearing at CFB Gagetown, and I bet she would have rather changed in a big plane rather than in the back of a car.
Oh, btw, Grandma and Sheila both got to shake his hand today in Saint John

10 Granchildren, 1 Couch

Last Saturday we all gathered in Johnville for the baptisms of Tanya and TJ's Jack, and Maria and Ben's Henry. Afterwards there was a barbeque at Tanya and TJ's house. Awesome to have everyone together. Too bad Jesse couldn't make it. Congratulations to Maria, Ben, TJ, and Tanya. And of course Jack and Henry.

Liberation Day in Holland... 67 Years

Today marks 67 years since the Liberation of Holland in 1945, and 2 years since we were there to celebrate the 65th anniversary. I've decided that this would be a good time for me to finish my blog post about our trip there then.
I've already covered Monday and Tuesday, and our trips to the war cemeteries in Holten and Groesbeek. On Wednesday May 5th, which was National Liberation Day, we stayed in Bathmen to enjoy Liberation festivities, which included lighting the Flame of Freedom.

The famous man in the tree.

And of course a parade. This float is about a bomber that went down quite close to Bathmen, we visited their graves on Friday.

On Thursday we were treated to a boat ride up the River IJssel. We saw several points where many Canadian Regiments crossed the river, in heavy fighting, which in turn was the prelude to the final liberation. Here is one point.

What is Betty looking at? We were suddenly treated to a surprise airshow.

This fellow got amazingly close to us.

Then a wonderful meal miraculously appeared, right up through the floor. We ate and drank before returning to Deventer.

That evening we were back in Deventer for a Concert for Freedom put on by the Dutch Royal Military Band.

Friday was a free day, so we all hopped in Jaap's car and went on a road trip.

Our first stop was the small graveyard in Bathmen, where the bomber crew was buried. Then a stroll through the town of Holten.

The reason we went to Holten, was that another family was staying on a dairy farm. So we were anxious to visit, especially as they had just put up a new barn with Lely robot milkers.

One thing I found neat was the use of cobblestones everywhere. No frost, so they stay really well. Here he is building a new bunker silo. Excavate out all the good soil, replace is with sand, cover with cobblestones, and pile your silage on top.

Friday evening was our farewell dinner. Again, more good food and drinks.

Saturday morning. Canadian Club. Secret day planned for us by the Deventer Rotarians. So we get on a bus and head up the road. We stop and walk into the woods. You know it's going to be a good day when you get in the middle of a forest at 10:00 AM and there is a table full of bottles of Holland's national drink, Orange Bitter. And raw herring!

We toured one of many bunkers that had been built after the war, in a top secret project, for the defense of the country in the event of another war. This project also involved massive flooding, and was unknown to the local people.

And then another parade, through another town, again reenacting the arrival of the Canadian troops in 1945. Grandma rode in a troop carrier and we rode in a truck. And we ended up at the quaint little country home of one of the Rotarians.

We had a great little meal in his garage, many bottles of red wine, and Grandma was recognized as a widow of a veteran.

Sunday took us to Apeldoorn, another parade and the 1st National Liberation Festival.

Our last supper with Fia and Jaap. Sarah ordered something that she wasn't really sure how to deal with.

Then the emotional Goodbyes.

After a delay waiting for an Icelandic ash cloud, we headed for home.

Greenland

Although we were late arriving, we had made plans to visit with our cousin Steve's wife, Traci Mo. She came over to the Best Western where we were staying and we introduced ourselves for the first time, and had a great visit.
